Chapter Fourteen

Sophia

I smile and say all the right things as I sit here with Saint Falcon, but my head is elsewhere. It’s still stuck on fucking Marshall and how he totally shut down whatever the hell we were.

I’m in the Falcon’s neck of the woods and I hate it. Their clubhouse is shitty, the people here give me the creeps, and all eyes have been on me since I walked in with Saint.

He is clearly unaware of my discomfort because he doesn’t know me for shit and I’m a damn good actress when I need to be. But this situation is putting me out of my comfort zone. I’m all for being pushed to my limits, but the only thing keeping me sane right now is the tracking device tucked into my sock.

“Sophia?” Saint says which brings me out of my thoughts and back to the moment.

“Sorry,” I say with a fake-ass smile. “I didn’t mean to zone out.”

“Care to share?” he says as he sips his beer from the bottle, leaning back in his seat opposite me.

“It’s nothing important.” I need to start doing some digging, but so far, this guy is giving me nothing.

“So, Sophia, what made you want to come for a drink with me?” he asks.

“We had fun the other night at Tulip, and I thought that we could get to know each other better,” I say, knowing full well that I need to turn on some charm in order to get this guy to talk.

“We did. But Marshall didn’t seem happy about us dancing together.”

Shit. He picked up on that. Ugh. Why did he have to mention Marshall?

I fake-laugh at his comment to try and throw him off of any scent that Marshall and I could have been anything other than business associates.

“Oh, you know what Marshall is like, always quick to try and cause chaos,” I say flippantly.

“Hmm. Is that all it was?”

“Of course. Marshall is nothing more to me than my boss.” And that is the truth. He made his choice, and now I’m trying to move on, get past whatever I may still feel for him, but that’s easier said than done.

“Did he ask you to meet me?” Saint questions and I get a prickling sensation running down my spine.

“No, Marshall doesn’t even know I’m here,” I say with a smile even as my heart starts to pound a little harder.

“Really?” he says in disbelief, and I just nod my head at him. “I know for damn sure that if you worked for me, there is no way in hell that I wouldn’t know what you were up to every minute of the day and night.” His eyes take on a hungry look, but it just makes me want to retch. Saint may be mildly good-looking, but he’s a fucking letch, just like his brother. I have no desire for this to go any further than a drink, so I need to get what I need and get the fuck out as quickly as I possibly can.
